Geologist collaborator Jens Ormö with the wearable computer system for proofing computer vision algorithms (for future use in cyborg or robotic astrobiological study on other planets/moons); photo taken by another geologist collaborator, Enrique Diaz Martinez. Roboticist McGuire is on the right, observing Ormö during his first astrobiological cyborg experience.
See our article (open-access preprint version) about the Cyborg Astrobiologist's first geological field trips.

Such images are processed in real-time (RT) by the
"Cyborg Astrobiologist" wearable-computer.
The images are then uploaded in real-time via wireless link.
See our Cyborg image archive, for a slide-show of some unprocessed images overlayed with RT-processed images.

  • Current and Recent Work:

Despite my avowed love for Bielefeld(ers) and building robots for Earth, I have moved to Madrid, and I am now a tenure-track research scientist at the Center for Astrobiology . I am building cyborg vision systems for exploring the prairies, mountains, and deserts of the Earth, searching for interesting geological and biological features. See the Cyborg Astrobiologist's first results at a geological site (open-access preprint version) with such an interest-map exploration system. These vision systems will later be transplanted onto crawling, flying, digging and swimming robots to goto Mars and Jupiter's possibly-watery moon, Europa , in order to search for other-worldly life. As of 2005, I am still working with the Bielefeld team, in order to improve their graphical programming language, NEO, and several Bielefeld individuals are co-investigators on my current Cyborg Astrobiologist project here in Spain.

In Bielefeld, I worked on building better vision systems for robots, with the Neuroinformatics group, led by Helge Ritter. Check out this picture of our efforts to train robots to cooperate with humans to build towers and bridges.
