Dear Martin and Ipke First let me thank you for organising such a successful and interesting workshop. The workshop at ZIF created the rare and much needed opportunity for people working in the area of sign-language and gestural HCI to meet and discuss their work. In addition, it was successful in the difficult task of bringing people from different disciplines together. It was very gratifying to hear researcher from areas including gesture, sign-linguistics, psychology, movement physiology, computer science, artificial intelligence, and industrial design discussing a common goal from their widely varying but complementary perspectives. The distinct international flavour of the meeting comprising participants from a variety European countries, USA and Japan made the event all the more valuable. I hope that the momentum of discussion is maintained until the next workshop dealing with these issues. To this end, I would suggest that participants are encouraged to make full use of the email discussion list that I referred to in the workshop. The details are as follows: ***************************** To join, send the email message: join gesture-sign-lang-tech yourfirstname yourlastname to the following address: mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk Messages can be posted by sending them to: gesture-sign-lang-tech@mailbase.ac.uk The list and its archive can be accessed via the WWW: http://www.mailbase.ac.uk extensive support is provided by the Mailbase support team which make the list particularly easy to use. The list is at present unmoderated and there is open access for anyone to view the membership list. shortly after joining, new members should post a short message outlining their interest and work, together with their webpage address if they have one. The discussion period scheduled at the end of the meeting was all too short although I thought a number of interesting issues were raised. Speaking personally, I would have liked more discussion but my level of fatigue was rather high by Friday afternoon. I encourage all participants to join the list and continue with the discussion started during the meeting. In addition to the many interesting presentations, Alan Wexelblat's lively and thought provoking keynote address provided plenty of material. ****************************** Please feel free to extract material from the above for both the ZIF report and for the workshop webpage (re: discussion list). As I am going on vacation tomorrow, I do not have time to write about the workshop in more detail at this moment. Also, if you wish, kick-off some discussion on the list. I will make my own contributions after I return from my holidays on the 8th October. Best Regards David ************************************** Dr. David M.
