April 2001 Appointment as Assistant Professor (Wissenschaftlicher Assistent) at the
Chair of Fermentation Engineering, Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld University, Germany.
1997-2001 Doctoral thesis.
Title: "Neue Verfahren zur Produktion von Plasmid-DNA als
Biopharmazeutikum (Novel processes for biopharmaceutical plasmid DNA
production".
1996-1997 Diploma thesis at the chair of Fermentation Engineering,
Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld University, Germany. Title: "Methoden
zur Quantifizierung von DNA: Vergleich und Optimierung (DNA quantitation
methods: comparison and optimization)." 1991-1996 Studies in
chemistry at the faculty of chemistry, Bielefeld University, Germany
Research
Main focus of our research is put
on fermentation engineering, downstream processing of biotechnological
products, and development of analytical methods for process- and product
quality-control.
The development of high cell density cultivation
processes especially for pharmaceutical plasmid DNA production is a major
topic in our research in fermentation engineering.
In the
area of downstream processing the development of product isolation
processes for large scale biotechnological production is a major goal.
Since plasmid DNA is gaining more and more importance as a pharmaceutical
drug, its production is of special interest. Areas of our research on this
topic are the scale-up of cell-disruption methods and further
downstream-processing steps, the extraction of nucleic acids, and the development of nucleic acid specific
affinity ligands based on protein-DNA interaction.
Technologies for process and product quality-control are developed
using capillary electrophoresis systems. Methods for plasmid quantitation
and analysis of plasmid homogeneity by capillary
gel electrophoresis (CGE) have already been developed at our chair.

Teaching
Senior students in molecular
biotechnology have the opportunity to make a project in one of our
research areas. Interested persons can contact Dr. Voß (D5-124 or
D5-Laboratory). Students in biochemistry and chemistry also have the
opportunity to start a blockwise practical training (Blockpraktikum) in
one of research areas.
In our molecular biotechnology course the
specialisation "Downstream Processing of Biotechnological Products" is
offered. It contains lecture (2 SWS), seminar (1 SWS), and a practical
training (6 SWS). Specialization is taking place during winter- and
summersemester.
Dr. Voß is also conducting practical training
"Basic Biotechnology II" and "Biotechnology for Biochemistry Students".
