My main research:
Engineering of a biorefinery concept based on biomass and high value products from different microalgae. Therefore we are cultivating photosynthetic prokaryotes, eukaryotes as well as protists and constructing photobioreactors for first low energy outdoor photobioreactor studies. High value products are e. g. α-tocopherol, phycocyanine, Ω-3-fatty acids or paramylon. The remaining biomass is converted into biofuels. Process enhancement is needed in several areas: microalgae for all seasons, light, media optimazation (synthetic or industrial waste for photoauto- or photoheterotrophic growth), high value products and purification, biofuels and pretreatment of the substrate, recycling, fermentation engineering, high cell densitiy cultivations and the construction of photobioreactors and other illuminated cultivation set ups.
