:: Computational RNomics ::
Our focus in this area is the analysis of microRNAs and their
targets. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short RNAs (around 22nt) that
post-transcriptionally regulate the expression of target genes by binding to
the target mRNAs. In cases of perfect or near-perfect complementarity between
miRNA and target site, the target mRNA is cleaved and subsequently degraded. In
cases of weaker complementarity, the translation of the mRNA into protein is
inhibited. The miRNA pathway constitutes a complex regulatory mechanism whose
importance and even existence has been recognised only recently.
