The conventions will take place at the University of Bielefeld which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 1994. The venue offers lecture halls of all sizes, an outstanding library, exhibition area, shops, post office and bank, cafeteria, and a selection of eating places under one roof.

The local research context for both conventions is the DFG Special Research Unit "Situated Artificial Communicators", initiated in 1993, and a number of government-funded project units in the research programs "AI and Computer Graphics", "Verbmobil", and "Molecular Bioinformatics".

Student participants can contact students in the program "Informatics in the Natural Sciences" of the Faculty of Technology, and in the program "Computer Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence" of the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature. Bielefeld (300 000 habitants) is easily reached on an hourly schedule by way of IC, ICE, and EC trains on the route Dortmund- Hannover. The nearest airports with hourly train connections are Hannover (115 km), Dortmund-Wickede (110 km), Düsseldorf (190 km), Frankfurt (320 km). The regional airports Paderborn- Lippstadt (50 km) und Münster-Osnabrück (75 km) can be reached by airport coaches.
