General

The aim of the master degree program Intelligent Systems is to convey knowledge and skills that enable students to analyse,  design and develop complex cognitive systems. Students are  guided increasingly to work independently following scientific principles and methodologies. The program is explicitly  designed to convey practical skills and abilities.

This program has an English-speaking branch which guarantees that courses will be offered to students not speaking German. A list of english study modules can be found here. Commands in English are veryfied by a language test (TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum of 87 points or telc English with a minimum grade of B2).

The Faculty of Technology will not incur any expenses for German courses for international students.

Aims

The aim of the master degree program Intelligent Systems is to convey knowledge and skills that enable students to analyse,  design and develop complex cognitive systems. Such cognitive systems are  characterized by the fact that they can perceive their environment and react accordingly in an intelligent manner. Another significant feature of these intelligent systems is their ability to learn and to thereby adapt to complex and changing environments, requirements and users. Such systems are especially relevant in the areas of robotics, virtual agents, multimedia and web information systems. Students are  guided increasingly to work independently following scientific principles and methodologies.  The program is explicitly  designed to convey practical skills and abilities.

Industry, service providers, and intelligent systems research create a large demand for computer science specialists with an interdisciplinary training as facilitated at Bielefeld University. Computer science specialists with a background in Intelligent Systems are needed  urgently  in all areas where robots, intelligent assistants, virtual agents (avatars) or intelligent information systems are  being developed. Possible areas of employment  are therefore e.g. in mechanical engineering, production, the motor  car industry, the media as well as in the development of autonomous systems (robots, avatars, dialog systems, intelligent assistants), the computer game industry and scientific research. 

Structure

At the start of the program students complete/participate in the project-oriented ‘Praktikum Intelligente Systeme’. Here students have to work on one or more projects covering the areas of  hardware, software engineering and development of new approaches and solutions in the area of intelligent systems. Graduates can therefore be expected to be able to work on large projects and/or to be in charge of them as well as being able to find solutions to complex problems. Up-to-date knowledge regarding IT hardware will also be conveyed to facilitate access to industrial  practice. Students will participate in an  additional practical project  worth 10 credit points in another module ‘Projekt’.
