Ipke Wachsmuth is chair of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. From 2002 to 2009 he has also been director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF). He holds a masters degree in mathematics (Dipl.-Math.), obtained in 1975 from the University of Hannover, Germany, where he also obtained his Ph.D. (Dr.rer.nat.) in 1980 for research in cellular automata synchronization, and a Habilitation degree in Informatics which he obtained in 1989 from the University of Osnabrück, Germany, for research on knowledge organization. Before coming to Bielefeld in 1989, he held faculty and project leader positions in the Department of Mathematics/Computer Science and the Linguistics Department at the University of Osnabrück, Germany. He was also assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Northern Illinois University in 1981-83 and research fellow in the LILOG group at IBM Germany in 1986-88. Prof. Wachsmuth has a strong multidisciplinary commitment and has published in the fields of cellular automata, cognitive learning research, education and intelligent tutoring systems, natural language understanding, AI technology assessment, expert and agent systems, large knowledge bases, virtual reality, and gestural and multimodal interaction. Among other professional services, Ipke Wachsmuth has been president of the German Cognitive Science Society and, until recently, coordinator of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 673 "Alignment in Communication".
