"Gesture- and Sign-Language Based communication in Human-Computer Interaction"

17th to 19th September 1997

An interdisciplinary event for those researching gesture-based interfaces and who want to meet and and exchange ideas across disciplines.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on gesture-based interfaces, gestural interaction, and sign-language Under the focus of Human-computer interfaces, the workshop will encompass all aspects of gestural interaction, including (but not restricted to):

¤ what are gestures?
¤ what do gestures convey about intentions?
¤ appropriateness of gestures and interfaces
¤ multimedia user interfaces
¤ the segmentation problem
¤ gesture semantics
¤ gesture-based interaction for interfaces and applications
¤ sign-language recognition
¤ gesture and speech integration
¤ techniques and algorithms for gesture recognition and segmentation

Proceedings of the work presented at the workshop will be published and made available to both those attending the workshop and others.

This workshop will be run in the lines of the Gesture Workshop '96 at the University of York held by Philip Harling and Alistair Edwards in March 1996

ABOUT THE VENUE

The workshop will be held in Bielefeld on or near the campus of the university. Bielefeld (~300 000 habitants) is located in North Germany on the flanks of the wooded hills of the Teutoburg Forest. As the regional center of East Wetsphalia, Bielefeld is easily reached on an hourly schedule by way of IC, ICE, and EC trains on the route Dortmund- Hannover. The nearest airports with hourly train connections are Hannover (115 km), Dortmund-Wickede (110 km), Düsseldorf (190 km), and Frankfurt (320 km). The regional airports Paderborn-Lippstadt (50 km) and Münster-Osnabrück (75 km) can be reached by airport shuttles.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

At this stage, we wish to hear from people who are interested in presenting their work (at whatever stage) at the workshop in form of a paper, poster or demonstration, or from those who wish to attend the workshop because they have an interest in the field. We intend to have non-overlapping sessions sorted by subtopics and allow for plenty of time for discussions.

Presenting your Work

If you are interested in presenting your work at the workshop, please send a short abstract of your intended paper to the organizers (gw97@TechFak.Uni-Bielefeld.DE) or send it by fax or post using the details at the top of this page.

Please also let us know that you will be attending by filling in this form or by e-mailing us.

We would like to stress that we are interested in submissions of work that is currently in progress, regardless of the stage of the work. Also we would like to stress that this workshop is intended as an interdisciplinary event.

Attending the Workshop

If you are interested in attending the workshop, either fill in this form or e-mail to the organizers (gw97@TechFak.Uni-Bielefeld.DE) or get in contact with us either by fax or by post using the details at the top of this page. Further details, including the registration form, will be sent to you as appropriate nearer the time of the workshop.
