The workshop will be held at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) in Bielefeld near the campus of the university. Bielefeld (~300 000 habitants) is located in North Germany on the flanks of the wooded hills of the Teutoburg Forest. As the regional center of East Westphalia, Bielefeld is easily reached on an hourly schedule by way of IC, ICE, and EC trains on the route Dortmund- Hannover. The nearest airports with hourly train connections are Hannover (115 km), Dortmund-Wickede (110 km), Düsseldorf (190 km), and Frankfurt (320 km). The regional airports Paderborn-Lippstadt (50 km) and Münster-Osnabrück (75 km) can be reached by airport shuttles.
The workshop will take place at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) which was founded in 1968 is an institution of the University of Bielefeld where scientists meet for a longer of shorter period of time. Contrary to other 'Institutes for Advanced Study' scientists from Germany and abroad are invited to work together on specific subjects either in research groups (duration about one year) or in workshops/conferences or sequences of conferences.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) is part of the University of Bielefeld which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1994. The venue offers lecture halls of all sizes, an outstanding library, exhibition area, shops, post office and bank, cafeteria, and a selection of eating places under one roof.
The local research context for the workshop is the DFG Collaborative Research Centre "Situated Artificial Communicators", initiated in 1993, the research in the Graduate Study Program "Task Oriented Communication" and a number of government-funded project units in the research programs "AI and Computer Graphics", and "Verbmobil".
